    Description

This is the prow removed from a small canoe in the Middle Sepik River in Papua New Guinea.  It's in the realistic form of the head of a saltwater crocodile which is commonly found in the rivers, swamps and coastal regions of New Guinea.  There is a big chip off the bottom towards the sawn end.  There are abrasions and chips in the worn surface, especially on the snout.  It's a used item and all the wounds are evidence of this.  I don't know its age but I've owned it forabout 25 years and it was old when I got it.  I bought it from the late great New Guinea Primitive Arts in Sydney, Australia.
