VINTAGE HAND CARVED WOOD HOUSE PANEL BY PAIWAN ARTIST, ABORIGINE NATIVE OF TAIWAN
This elegant vintage hand carved wood house panel depicting a human figure measures 24 1/4 inches tall by 7 inches wide and 5/8 inch thick. Created by a Paiwan artist, an aborigine native of Taiwan. The back side of the panel is marked with stamped letters into the wood:
HAND CARVED IN TAIWAN BY ABORIGINE NATIVES.
There are two holes at the top to tread a rope for hanging.
PLEASE NOTE CONDITION:
As found at an estate sale. The panel has evidence of water stain on the back bottom, otherwise the panel is in very
fine condition. There are no chips and no cracks to the wood.
The Paiwan, an indigenous group on the island of Taiwan, number approximately seventy thousand. The Paiwan have developed a distinctive style of woodcarving. Human figures, which represent ancestors, heroes, and warriors, are common themes. The decorated panels flanked the entryway of a Paiwan ancestral house. These panels were carved and named for the ranking ancestors of the house.
