VANUATU BANKS ISLANDS GRADE SOCIETY FERN FIGURE, 52 INCHES IN HEIGHT
Offered is a grade society fern figure from the northern Banks Islands in Vanuatu, 52 inches (approximately 132 cm.) in height, collected in the 1960's.
This impressive figure has the typical lozenge or diamond-shape of Banks Islands' fern figures with bulbous eyes, vertical ringlets dividing the face and alternating "dog's teeth" around the perimeter of the carving. This fern figure may have been the personal totem of a high-ranking individual of the village or displayed in the communal men's house. The condition of the piece is good with no loss to the eyes, ringlets and "dog's teeth" which have some erosion and wear consistent with the age of the carving. The reverse of the figure shows the hollow middle that is typical of Vanuatu fern figures.
This piece will display well when mounted on a custom stand.
