Description
This is a wonderful Vintage Bone and Bamboo Batak Calendar or a Porhalaan from Sumatra. It is used by the Datu or Shaman of the Batak People of Sumatra. This calendar helps to determine auspicious dates for specific occasions. This calendar or Porhlaan is consulted to determine the sowing, harvesting time , a wedding day, when to buy a home and traveling. The top of this calendar has a ornate incised bone with zodiac symbols and different writings of the Batak people. The calendar is based on the lunar year. The twelve bamboo strips are for months, with 30 squares for the days, and each square has a symbol that denotes the day's specific meaning. The Porhalaan is used in a ceremony and the darkening of the back of the bamboos strips is caused by sacred smoke. This beautiful calendar is so unique and would be a wonderful addition to your collection or home.Late 20-Century
