Rare Indigenous Upper Sepik Food Pounder Of The Iwam People. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail. This is another piece that was purchased from the estate of a private collector of indigenous Papua New Guinea artifacts.
This was absolutely the most impressive collection I've ever been privy to and I was so lucky to bring home a couple choice pieces.
I was educated by the collector that this was an intriguing piece that came from the Iwam people
The Sepik Iwam of Papua New Guinea number at about 4,800- 6,100 people. They are part of the New Guinea people cluster within the Pacific Islanders affinity bloc.
This people group is only found in Papua New Guinea and their primary languages Sepik Iwam.
This piece measures about 32 in long and is about 3 in at its widest.
I've tried to be detailed in the photographs so that you can see that this piece is in relatively good condition but has some scuffs and gouging from use over the years.
I was particularly intrigued with the stylized profiles of a person's eye and nose on both the top and center of this food pounder.
Also of note is that this piece still has some of its original black paint.
I have to wonder about the hands that carved this piece and used it before it ever made its way onto the collector's market.
A big piece at over 2 ft tall, this would make quite an impact displayed as part of your collection.
I am happy to answer any questions you might have or to take more specific pictures of this piece should you request.
I'm awfully pleased you came in to take a look ✌️
