Description
Southern Desert Mulga Hunting BoomerangThis hunting boomerang, or throwstick was made out of Mulga, a dense desert hardwood. I acquired this boomerang in 1983 from Ben Ruhe, a collector who had worked for the Smithsonian Institution in the 1970s. Ben originally collected this throw stick in the early 1950s when he lived and worked in Australia. This is a nicely constructed slender boomerang made in the 1940s or earlier for Aboriginal use. Because of its size, it was used by young hunters in training or for throwing at birds. Both sides are scraped smooth and there is an attractive rippling or fiddle back grain. There is no damage from use. There is one small construction flaw where the surface has a small shallow flaking mark, probably due to scraping the surface near a natual void. A very nice artifact in excellent condition. I have owned it for nearly 40 years.
