Lower Sepik Mask, Papua New Guinea

Description

This is a good example of lower Sepik carving and of the area's masks.  It has features commonly seen in many lower Sepik carvings: the incised portion above the forehead, the color, the form of the beard around the lower part of the face, the pierced septum, and the proportions and arrangement of the facial features, 14 1/8" tall, including the lug at the bottom, x 6 1/8" x  3 1/2".  This not an old mask and doesn't show much wear.  There is a natural crack open in the wood at the top about 3" long.  Otherwise in good shape.
