    Description

    You are bidding on a very rare 8" tall x 8" wide x 1 1/8" thick terra cotta tile with a Mayan ( Serpent ) design that was made by Paul St Gaudens ( 1900-1954 ) while working in Denver, Colorado, in the late 1920s.  Paul St Gaudens came to Denver, in 1927, to teach ceramics at the Chappell School, which later became the Denver Art Museum.  He stayed until 1929.  While in Denver, St Gaudens made his tiles at the Heinz Roofing Tile Company which was located at the north end of downtown Denver and was owned by George P. Heinz ( 1872-1932 ).  Heinz was a trustee of the Chappell House / Denver Art Museum from 1925 until 1931.  This tile is in great shape and it is signed with St Gaudens' "PstG" monogram.
    The tiles that I am currently offering were recently discovered in a Denver warehouse where they had been stored for the last 100 years!
