    The exploration of the Pacific Islands has been an exceptional adventure undertaken by frequent travelers since the 16th century, Wallis, Cook, La Pérouse, Bougainville and Dumont d'Urville are among the best known of those who braved these unknown seas, and discovered what they thought was paradise: Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia. Oceania covers thousands of islands, large and small, like the immense New Guinea but also simple coral atolls. The natives developed there complex cultures of great variety. In most of them, the place of art is fundamental as an integration into religious and / or social life. These arts include not only architecture, painting, and sculpture, but also music, dance, prayer, and body adornment. Almost all available materials are used, whether durable or ephemeral.
    For many reasons, mainly historical, the art of the Pacific has been relatively neglected. While a large number of specialized, technical or anthropological publications exist, no large-scale synthesis has been published for thirty years, despite the many important discoveries.
