Description
This unique drum originates from Lower Sepik in Papua New Guinea. The beautiful craftsmanship and intricate details on the Kundu drum make it a must-have for collectors of ethnographic artifacts. This was purchased by my father in New Guinea in 1980. I do not know the age of the Kundu, but the original skin head -and supporting wrap, deteriorated completely. I'm unsure how long that would take. I remember it's unique shape made a wonderful sound. It is beautifully carved with some reddish staining that accentuates the design. I photographed it in strong light to show this. There is a small paper residue, as shown on the second photo. It seems to be coming off with me scratching it. Some of my father's collection was leant to museums from 1980-83. This may be a remnant of a "removable" tag. There is one small nick on one point, as shown in the last photo. This appears to be carved from one piece of wood. The rest looks good to me, but please review photos to verify.
It is approximately 22 inches tall. See photos for approximate head and bottom measurements.
