    Description

This statue was made in one of the villages on the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea, and the prior owner obtained it during his travels in New Guinea in the 1960's. This type of figure is generally identified as an "ancestor statue" that is used during young men's initiation ceremonies. These ancestor figures are made in male and female images, but in this case the sculptor combined the body of a young female with the impressive, large head of a male warrior. Note also the carving on the belly that adapts the Sepik motif of two modified "C's" back-to-back linked in the middle by a circle resulting in an additional unisex face (of a baby or a spirit or...).
