Molas are  brightly decorated fabric panels, shirts or upper garments for men or women made by layering and Hand-Stitching cut fabric into designs for fronts and backs of Kuna women´s blouses.
The Kuna people are indigenous to
the San Blas Archipelago off the northeast coast of Panamá. Devloped in the late 1800s from modified indigenous body painting designs, molas are produced with a combination of reverse appliqué and appliqué. Two or more layers of different colors of cotton cloth are hand-sewn loosely together, and the design and its details are cut through the top layers to reach the under color. Hand stitching attaches each folded cut edge to a lower layer. Frequently small scraps of color are inserted beneath the top layer to emphasize details.
    High quality molas can take
    months to complete.
